Boundaries, Exes, and Building Trust in Real Time

Introduction – The Unexpected Client
Life has a way of testing your growth in the most ironic ways. Recently, my ex-fling reached out—again—with the same line he’s used for almost two years: “Can you do my locs? Can you do my facial?” Every time he’s come back into my life, it’s been under the disguise of a “service,” though he never actually followed through with payment.

This time, though, things were different. I’m in a committed relationship now. And when he reached out to “reattach his locs,” I recognized the cycle. Instead of entertaining it, I chose differently: I blocked and deleted the messages. No second chances disguised as services. That’s the power of boundaries in relationships.

The Trust Test
The universe has a funny way of stacking lessons. While I was trying to sell my car, I stepped outside to take a phone call. Darius was inside washing the dog, music blasting. He came out right as I was ending the call and immediately felt like I was hiding something.

At first, I got defensive. My instinct was to say, “Why don’t you trust me?” But then I caught myself. He doesn’t fully trust me right now because I broke that trust before. His feelings were valid. My responsibility was to respond with reassurance, not defensiveness.

So I went back, apologized, and explained. I told him:

  • Who it was. (A car buyer, not an ex.)
  • That his feelings are valid. (I understand why it triggered him.)
  • That I take accountability. (I created the shadow of doubt before, and I don’t want to fuel it anymore.)

Proud of My Growth
Old me would’ve escalated. Old me would’ve taken offense, argued louder, and turned it into a bigger problem. But growth looks like catching yourself in the moment and pivoting. Instead of pushing him away, I leaned in and reassured him.

This moment reminded me of something powerful: boundaries and trust go hand in hand. Blocking my ex wasn’t just about cutting him off—it was about respecting myself, my relationship, and my growth. And addressing Darius’s feelings wasn’t about admitting guilt—it was about acknowledging where trust had been cracked and showing him I’m committed to repairing it.

Takeaway Message
Life will always give us opportunities to repeat old cycles or create new patterns. Whether it’s an ex trying to slip back in or a partner questioning your actions, the choice is yours: defend your ego or build your future.

This time, I chose differently. And I’m proud of that.
